Katharine Swailes - Strata

£4,800.00

Hand woven wool and linen tapestry

27 x 227 cm

“Blue Strata is a very rare work as it is woven on a wool warp at a very fine 5epc setting. It is the only work I have woven of this type.

It was conceived while walking in the highlands of Scotland contemplating the rock formations of the Assynt peninsular wild and remote, immortalised by Norman MaCcaig in his poem A Man in Assynt:”

Glaciers, grinding West, gouged out
these valleys, rasping the brown sandstone,
and left, on the hard rock below –
the ruffled foreland –
this frieze of mountains, filed
on the blue air –
Stac Polly,
Cul Beag, Cul Mor, Suilven,
Canisp –
a frieze and
a litany.
