Painter of strong figurative pictures
James Gorman
James Gorman (1931 -2005) was a painter in oil, acrylic and watercolour, and teacher, born in Gourock, Renfrewshire.
He studied at Glasgow School of Art, 1949–53, one of his notable teacher being Walter Pritchard for mural painting, in which Gorman gained his diploma, also winning a travelling scholarship. His own murals include Trinity College, Glasgow, 1953–4; a mural design for Eastwood Senior High School, 1966; and for Moorfoot Primary School, Gourock, 1970.
His National Service included various art work and a mural that is now in the War Office.
He went on to be principal teacher of art and design at John Neilson Institute, Paisley, and at Port Glasgow High School. Gorman’s work ranged from delicate landscape watercolours to strong figurative pictures. He claimed a “Celtic influence in my use of nets to generate images”.
